Girls' Basketball Camp

During this week, the girls' basketball team flew to Anchorage to attend NBC basketball camp. 10 students and one chaperone flew in for the week, staying at the Alaska Pacific University dorms and playing games at UAA. They played several games each day and attended practices and clinics, keeping them occupied from 8am to 11pm.
The students were provided with a coach. Coach Perry taught them a lot about the game and coached them against teams from all across the state. Tuluksak was the only village representing the region. They had the opportunity to play against 4A state champions Wasilla and Juneau. Hopefully this experience will help lead them to state next year!

2011 Graduation

This is Maver from sixth grade reporting on Tuluksak graduation. Today was graduation for high school, middle school, and kindergarten. Students and teachers set up the gym and stage for the event and the whole community came to watch.

A slideshow with pictures of graduating students played while people sat down. The graduates all came in at once, wearing caps and gowns. The audience clapped and took lots of pictures.

The kindergarteners graduated first. They performed a story and sang, then received diplomas. After that the eighth graders received their diplomas.

Superintendent Howard Diamond gave the high school seniors words of encouragement and Principal Lance Jackson was the keynote speaker. There were four graduating seniors: Willie Alexie, Peter J. Demientieff, Chad Gregory, and Bertha Napoka.

After the graduation everyone gathered in the Hall of Elders to eat. Staff and students helped prepare and serve a meal for the community. We had turkey, jello, and a lot more, but I mostly just ate jello. The orange jello was the best!

I got the chance to interview three of the graduating seniors before and after the graduation. When asked about how he planned on celebrating his graduation, P.J. said, “I’m celebrating right now.”
The three graduates I interviewed all have plans for the future. Chad said, “I will work as an electrician or auto mechanic. I’ll go train in South Dakota at the United Tribes Technical College.”
Willie said, “I’m going to Job Corps for heavy equipment, carpentry, or to be an auto mechanic.”
P.J. will also be going to Job Corps. He said, “I’ll be getting a degree in computer programming.”

When asked about their favorite high school memories, Chad and Willie both agreed that it was graduating. P.J. said his favorite memory was last year’s prom.

The last question I asked was how the seniors felt about graduating. P.J. answered, “Look at my face. I feel relieved, happy, excited, and sad all at the same time.”

Congratulations to all the graduates! ☺

Graduation Today

Be sure to come to graduation today. The ceremony starts at 2:00 and there's a community feed at 3:30. Come on out and support your Tuluksak graduates.

Spring Clean Up

Hi! This is Janelle telling you about Spring Clean Up here in Tuluksak. Today the whole school came together to clean up. We picked up trash outside, cleaned the school, and helped set up prom and graduation.
The reason why there is so much trash right now is because every year when the snow melts, all the trash that has collected over the year is left behind for us to clean up.
6th grader Jon said the best part of cleaning up was getting to be outside all day. My favorite part of today was not doing anything, just sitting and watching the others do the work while I ate candy and drank soda. Middle school teacher Mr. Dexter’s favorite part of the day was making students clean the garbage around the teacher housing.
7th grader Desiree's favorite part of the day was when she didn’t have to pick up any more trash. Middle school teacher Ms. Schnittker said she picked up all kinds of things, from diapers to an an eight grader’s old student certificate from the first grade for saying his ABC’s correctly.
The whole school had a good time being outside in the Spring sunshine and the village is looking a lot cleaner.

Staff Dinner

Today our guest blogger is Savannah. She is in 9th grade and will be writing about the dinner that Mr. Jackson and some of the students held for the staff of our school.

"When I was helping for the staff/teacher dinner, we cooked alot of delicious food. We cooked chicken wings, cookies, bread, ribs, and fruit salad.

I learned how to spread 2 different flavorings on the chicken. One was the 2 different kinds of cheese and the other one had tabasco, salsa, salt and pepper.

I wanted to help because I knew there was alot of food to dish and serve. I also wanted to help because I wanted to learn how to cook different kinds of food. I had alot of fun."

The dinner was a big success. The staff seemed to love the food. We presented our principal/head chef, Mr. Jackson, with a quilt the school had made for him. We all left with full stomachs and high spirits.

Thank you to all those who worked so hard to make this dinner possible.

A Science Fair Report- by Henry

The middle schoolers were making projects and it was very awesome. This was very cool, some were making fun stuff. The kindergarten class came in and started walking around, so students did demos of their projects for the kids. I think that everybody’s projects were great. So everyone had to get ready and try to speak as if they were to introduce their experiment to others.

During the science fair, we all had to try to get ready as other classes came to see what we were doing. The second and third graders came and saw the middle schoolers, so that they might be able to try and make what the middle schoolers were making. The kids were having a lot of fun because of the experiments that they made. Some were having too much fun and didn’t listen that much.

Akiak and Akiachak came for the fair. They made spaghetti bridges and went to test the capacity of weight each could hold. The students played, worked, and did other stuff, keeping each other busy. Akiak, Akiachak and Tuluksak all challenged each other in the spaghetti bridge competition. Some of the community came to watch the fair and the students from the district, seeking to do well at the spaghetti bridge contest.

Kuskokwim 300!

The K-300 happened this weekend. The mid-distance sled dog race goes from Bethel to Aniak and back, stopping in Tuluksak on both legs of the trip. Volunteers and spectators braved the cold to see the racers come in early Sunday morning.

Around 1 am, Paul Gebhardt was thefirst to arrive for his mandatory 4 hour rest. Mike Williams, Jr. was close behind. The two went on to be the first to arrive in Bethel respectively.

With the temperature around -20°, plus a steady breeze, a lot of people opted to stay indoors and wait for the mushers.

Volunteers prepared food for the mushers and volunteers. The fry bread was a definite highlight. Mushers also got a chance to warm up and get a little sleep.

Back To School

After a nice little winter break, school's underway again and the new year is bringing a new semester with it. In the middle school, students are beginning a shop class, learning all kinds of new skills. So far nobody's lost a limb, knock on wood.

Starting next week, all students are welcome to join the Tuluksak Schools Yup'ik Dance Group. This is going to be a lot of fun. Everyone who's interested can meet in the Hall of Elders on Monday at 4 for an informational meeting. Whether you want to dance, sing, drum or do it all, you're welcome to join!
