Lunar Eclipse

Tuluksak was a great place to see the lunar eclipse from last night. Clear skies and the absence of city lights made for a nice view of the event. It was only -1°F, which isn't warm, but isn't too bad for this time of year.

Christmas Pageant

Things are winding down as the semester ends and Christmas break begins. Last Friday the school put on its annual Christmas pageant. Students and community members gathered to watch performances from the elementary and middle school students (plus some key contributions from teachers and aides).

The kindergarteners were unable to make it, but some adorable elves performed in their place. Some of them looked pretty familiar, though.

The first graders rocked out as hard as any first graders can. The third graders performed "Silent Night" using sign language. Grades 2-5 teamed up for "The Twelve Days of Tuluksak"

Last, but not least, the middle schoolers ended the pageant with some Christmas themed stand-up comedy.

Following the pageant, cake was served. Even Mr. and Mrs. Claus stopped by for a visit.

The Elder Project

The Tuluksak high school students are doing an elder project for our community. The students want to know more about their Yup'ik culture, values and ways of life in order to preserve them. This includes helping elders in their everyday lives and also learning from them.

Students have already identified the village's elders and begun working with them. So far, projects have ranged from helping with household chores, hauling water, emptying honey buckets, chopping wood, and delivering lunch to cutting down and delivering Christmas trees.

Elders will also be helping students by teaching them skills, such as trapping and sewing, as well as telling stories that were passed down to them.

In addition to cutting down Christmas trees, students took ring samples to use for tree-ring dating. They will scientifically date a tree based on the analysis of tree rings.

Some trees may be more magnificent than others, but each has its own charm. The above tree, nicknamed Harvey, could easily serve as a prop for "A Charlie Brown Christmas." For now it makes its home in Ms. Dixon's Social Studies classroom, bringing joy to (or rousing pity from) all who see it.

Student Mentors

Students from Ms. Dixon's 10th grade class have been spending some time in Ms. Black's third grade room helping students with their lessons. High school students are more than role models to the younger students; they are mentors, demonstrating a commitment to their own personal education. Upon leaving the room, 10th grader Willeth received a big hug and "thank you" from her 3rd grade student.
